Information provided by Wayne County Commissioner Gary Woronchack:

Work is continuing on the Miller Road bridge at Rotunda Drive in Dearborn, which has been closed since summer.

The Wayne County Commission approved contracts for the work last month.

The bridge was closed July 25 when inspections determined it was unsafe for traffic. It was initially believed 50-80 steel supports would need to be installed, with estimated completion by the end of November.

However, further inspections found the bridge's condition much worse than originally thought and in need of close to 500 supports. This resulted in a longer process for getting contracts in place and design work completed. Work began last month, and it is now estimated that some lanes will open on both Rotunda and Miller in mid

April, with all lanes open and work completed by the start of summer.

This extended closure has caused a traffic hardship not only for the many employees of the Ford Motor Co. industrial complex but also the residents of southeast Dearborn in the Salina neighborhood.

Commissioner Woronchak held a town hall-style meeting at Salina in November to explain what was happening with the bridge and to hear the concerns of neighborhood residents. County road officials attended the meeting to provide technical details.

The contracts approved Dec. 7 by the Wayne County Commission were $3.5 million with C.A. Hull Co. for the repair work, and $780,000 to Wade Trim Associates for design and engineering services.

It is expected that the repairs will secure the bridge until a full replacement is done around 2023.

The initial stages of another road project, unrelated to but near the Miller-Rotunda bridge project, was begun on Rotunda Drive, west of Greenfield Road. Comer sidewalks were cut to allow for disability access.

It was the initial work for a major resurfacing project on Rotunda that will take place in the spring. Nearly one mile of Rotunda will be resurfaced, from the Rouge River bridge to Commerce Drive.
